CLASSIFICATION FCI: Group 9 companion dog.
Section 11 Molosoides small size.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: Descendant likely, as all the Bulldogs, the Molossian from Epirus and the Roman Empire, a relative of the Bulldog of Great Britain, the Alans of the Middle Ages, and the bulldogs and pugs of France, the bulldog we know is the product of different crossings made passionate breeders of the neighborhoods of Paris in the 1880s. At that time was the companion of workers in the central market of Paris - butchers, coachmen - but soon learned to conquer the high society and the artistic world by his particular appearance and character. Thus, it spread quickly. The first breed club was founded in 1880 in Paris. The first registration record dates from 1885 and the first standard was established in 1898, the year in which the French Central Canine Society recognized the breed of the French Bulldog. The French Bulldog was first exhibited from 1887. The standard was modified in 1931, 1932 and 1948. It was reformulated in 1986 by HF Réant and R. Triquet (FCI publication 1987) and then in 1994 by the Committee of the French Bulldog Club, with the collaboration of R. Triquet.
GENERAL APPEARANCE: Molosser is the typical small size. It is a sturdy dog despite its small size and its small and plump proportions. His hair is short and his face is short and flat. The ears are upright and the tail is short of birth. Must have the appearance of an active animal, awake, very muscular, of a compact structure and strong bones.
BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT: It is sociable, cheerful, playful, athletic and alert. It is particularly affectionate with their master and children.
HEAD: This must be very strong, broad and square, and must be covered by skin, forming almost symmetrical folds and wrinkles. The head of the bulldog is characterized by a contraction of maxillo-nasal mass, so the skull has taken up in extent it has lost in length.
CRANIAL REGION:
Skull: Broad, almost flat, the forehead is bulging. Superciliary arches prominent, separated by a particularly developed furrow between the eyes. The furrow must not extend to the front. The occipital crest is hardly developed.
Frontal-nasal depression (stop): Very sharp.
FACIAL REGION:
Nose: Broad, very short, raised, the nostrils are wide open, are symmetrical and extend obliquely backward. The inclination of the nostrils and the nose-up, should be allowed, however, a normal nasal breathing.
Muzzle: Rather short, wide and has concentrically symmetrical folds coming down on the upper lip (length: 1 / 6 of the total length of the head).
Lips: Thick, a little loose, black color. The upper lip to the bottom in the center and completely cover the teeth, which must never be visible. The profile of the upper lip is descending and rounded. The tongue should never be visible.
Jaws: They are broad, square, strong. The lower jaw wide a curve that ends in front of the upper jaw. With mouth closed, the prominence of the lower jaw (prognathism) is moderated by the curvature of the branches of the mandible. This curvature is necessary to avoid an outstanding too noticeable in the lower jaw.
Teeth: The lower incisors are never found behind the upper incisors. The inferior incisive arch is rounded. The jaws must not show any lateral deviation, nor torsion. The separation of the incisive arcades is not narrowly tailored because it is essential that the upper and lower lips come together to completely cover the teeth.
Cheeks: The cheek muscles are well developed, but never stand out.
Eyes: awake expression, set low and well away from the nose and especially the ears. They are dark, fairly large, well rounded, slightly protruding, the sclera is never visible when the animal looking straight ahead. The edge of the eyelids must be black.
Ears: Medium size, wide at the base and rounded at the tip. Are erect, set high, but not too close to each other. The pavilion is open to the front. The skin should be fine and soft to the touch.
NECK: Short and slightly arched. No dewlap.
BODY:
Topline: The topline rises progressively at the spine and then descend rapidly towards the tail.
Back: Broad and muscular.
Loin: Short and broad.
Croup: Oblique.
Chest: Cylindrical and well down below. The ribs are barrel-shaped and very rounded.
Sill: It is very open.
Belly and flanks: Raised but not tucked up.
TAIL: Short, set low on the rump, attached to the buttocks. Thick at the base, knotted or kinked naturally and tapering at the tip. Even if the dog is alert, the tail should be below the horizontal. The relatively long tail (not to exceed the hock), folded and pointed, is accepted, though not highly valued.
TIPS
Forequarters: Seen in profile and from the front, regular aplomb.
Shoulder: Short, thick, strong and muscular appearance.
Arm: Short.
Elbow: Strictly fitting.
Forearm: Short, well separated, straight and muscular.
Pastern joint and Pastern: Solid and short.
Hindquarters: Strong and muscular, slightly longer than the others, thus raising the hindquarters. Seen in profile and from behind, have regular aplomb.
Upper thigh: Muscular, firm, but not too round.
Hock: Fairly low. It is not too angular, and especially not too straight.
Hock: Solid and short. The Bulldog should be born without dewclaws.
FEET
Feet: Round, small, are known as "cat feet". They rely firmly on the ground and turn slightly outward. The fingers are very compact, nails short, thick and separated. The pads are hard, thick and black. In brindle dogs nails should be black.
In dogs "Caille" (fawn brindle dogs with white patches fairly extended) and the tawny color (white patches or too spread fairly) dark nails are preferred, but not be penalized in color.
Feet: Compact.
MOVEMENT: Step loose, the limbs moving parallel to the plane of the body.
COAT
HAIR: It is beautiful, satin, flat, shiny and smooth.
COLOR:
Uniform tawny tone, brindled or not, or with white patches moderately extended.
Fawn, whether or not tabby with white patches or fairly widespread.
We accept all tawny hues, from red, to the coffee. The entirely white dogs are classified under the category of "fawn brindle with white patches widespread." If a dog has a very dark nose and dark eyes with dark eyelids, may exceptionally be tolerated some depigmentation of the face, as long as the animal is very beautiful.
SIZE AND WEIGHT: For a bulldog in good condition, the weight should not be below 8 kg nor over 14 kg, because the size is in proportion to weight.
FAULTS: Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which is considered the degree of
deviation from the standard and its impact on health and welfare of the dog.
